The Solution

CytoStorm's Inflex System™ solution works with existing emergency interventions like Narcan®.

  • Narcan® only restores the respiratory function from 30 to 90 minutes allowing more patients to reach an ER at hospital.
  • Narcan® does not remove opioids or other drugs or toxins from the blood.
  • CytoStorm's Inflex System™ does remove toxins and drugs, including Fentanyl and other opioids.
  • CytoStorm's Inflex System™ consists of several components including a Tubing Set and a patented Inflex Pump and a Smart Column.

Inflex Pump™

How the Inflex System™ Works

1 – Blood Extraction
Contaminated blood is drawn from patient and directed into system for processing

2 – Apheresis Column
Apheresis Column separates red blood cells, platelets, and white blood cells from plasma.
Red blood cells are returned to patient, ensuring minimal stress

3 – Plasma
Isolated plasma containing toxins and cytokines is directed to Smart Adsorption Column

4 – Inflex Smart Adsorption Column
Toxins, cytokines, and harmful metabolites are selectively removed from plasma

5 – Blood Return
Cleaned plasma is combined with red blood cells, platelets and white blood cells, and returned to patient

An unmet clinical need

Opioid overdose remains one of the leading causes of preventable death worldwide, while liver coma and cytokine storms (e.g., in sepsis or viral infections) represent major challenges in critical care.

  • These conditions lead to rapid deterioration, often overwhelming current intensive care approaches.

  • There is a lack of fast, targeted solutions capable of detoxifying blood in real time.

Current treatments

Today, interventions are often limited and reactive:

  • Drug overdose is treated with naloxone (Narcan©), which restores breathing but does not remove circulating opioids or metabolites.

  • Patients with liver coma (also known as hepatic encephalopathy) rely on treatments such as lactulose, rifaximin, or ultimately liver transplantation, approaches that are slow, inconsistent, and resource-intensive.

  • Sepsis is managed with broad immunosuppressive therapies, which lack precision and carry significant risks.

These options are delayed, invasive, or insufficient, leaving a dangerous therapeutic gap in the emergency setting.

Rapid Life-Saving Efficacy

Rapid Life-Saving Efficacy

Rapid Life-Saving Efficacy

The CytoStorm's Inflex System™ delivers immediate blood detoxification in critical emergencies such as drug overdose, liver coma and sepsis, bridging the therapeutic gap between first-response interventions and definitive care. Indeed, the bench study at USC demonstrated that the Inflex column can remove 96% of fentanyl from plasma in 90 minutes and 88% to 95% of the different cytokines.  The animal study demonstrated the safety of human-machine interface.
